Bob Hoenig is a retired portrait photographer from the San Francisco Bay area. He became interested in ceramics when he retired to upcountry Maui in 1991. He specializes in functional pottery featuring the “sgraffito” design technique. “Sgraffito” in Italian means “scratched” with contrasting clay colors carved through to create the final image. Maui provides constant inspiration for his designs with sea turtles (Hawaiian “honu”) and octopus (Hawaiian “he’e”/Japanese “tako”) being his favorites as well as plumeria, humpback whales (Hawaiian “kohola”), tropical fish, bamboo, koi and seashells.
